M3U vs M3U8. Know what you’re opening.
M3U is a text playlist format; M3U8 identifies a UTF-8 playlist. An M3U8 URL can describe an HLS stream whose media is delivered in segments, rather than a lineup of separate channels. In Dashow, use M3U Playlist for a channel list and Video link for a supported direct media or remote HLS URL.

A playlist points to media. It is not the movie itself.
A playlist is a text document that tells a player where to find items. A channel lineup can include names and addresses for multiple channels. The player reads those entries and requests the selected stream when you choose something to watch. Saving the list does not necessarily save the video carried by its links.
This is why a tiny playlist file can represent hours of viewing. It describes where the content comes from; the content arrives separately. If a listed address expires or is no longer reachable, the channel can stop working even when the playlist text still opens normally. The list and the media are distinct checks.
An M3U8 URL may be one HLS viewing experience.
HLS uses playlists to describe media segments and, where provided, alternative stream variants. A player requests the manifest and then the resources required for playback. The top-level URL can look like a playlist even though the user experiences one movie, episode or live broadcast rather than a menu of unrelated channels.
That makes M3U8 more than a synonym for a TV lineup. The useful question is what the document describes. A full remote HLS URL gives the player a location from which to resolve its resources. A local copy of only that text does not include every segment needed to create a self-contained offline video.
Choose the Dashow entry that matches your link.
For a channel lineup URL, choose Add → M3U Playlist. For a saved .m3u file, choose Add → Files. Dashow supports local or remote M3U channel lists containing HTTP or HTTPS entries. It reads the list so you can browse channels; local relative video files inside a playlist are not imported as a collection.
For a supported direct video resource or remote HLS stream, choose Video link. Use the complete source address you are allowed to access, including its required path. A webpage containing a player is a different input; use the Safari or screen-sharing route for permitted browser content rather than treating the page address as the media itself.
Check the first item before moving to the car.
After adding a lineup, select one familiar channel and test picture and sound on the iPhone. After adding a direct HLS URL, confirm that the intended video or broadcast begins. This catches a wrong input type, unavailable stream or incomplete address before the external display becomes part of the setup.
If the list appears but only one channel fails, check that entry with the source owner. If the direct stream buffers, compare another source or a local file. Once the phone playback is working, select a compatible car display while parked. For dependable viewing without internet streaming, prepare a completed local video instead.
